Mondial de la Pipe |

Quel était le point de départ ? Faire se rencontrer
des artisans pipiers, des sociétés pipières, des revendeurs, des
distributeurs...
conditions. Poser la question, c'est y répondre...

When several months ago the idea of the Mondial de la Pipe/Pipe World was launched, what was the initial objective ? To create a meatingplace for big pipe companies, artisans, distributors, retailers, collectors and pipe smokers. In sum, to create an international pipe show in Paris. A great idea and an event to look forward to. Today we nourish no longer any hope to witness the birth of a real pipe show in the French capital. Apparently, Michel Burton, the organizer of this event, has merely opted for a fair where shop owners meet the big producers. Given the fact that Michel Burton is the editor of La Revue des Tabacs, a magazine distributed exclusively to a public of distributors and retailers active in the tobacco business, he is naturally inclined to organize an event aimed at his public of tobacconists. That’s why he has invited tobacco shop owners from several countries. Their travel and hotel expenses are paid for since they are invited. For the pipe companies and the artisan carvers, it’s an entirely different ball game. As Michel Burton sees it, they should be grateful that these tobacconists are invited, since it gives them the opportunity to make lucrative deals. Hence, in his mind, the pipe producers should be willing to pick up at least a part of the bill of the expenses made to bring over the shop owners. Consequently the table fees for exhibitors are steep, even outrageous, and in no way similar to the table fees that are customary at the established pipe shows. For the big pipe companies the fee is four times higher than at the RTDA show. For artisans the price of a table is about ten times higher than the fees at the Richmond or Chicago show. Michel Burton definitely is not a pipe connoisseur. He isn’t part of the international pipe community. Hence he failed to contact pipe makers and collectors. Consequently, the vast majority of carvers and pipe fans isn’t even aware of the event. As for those that do know the existence of the Mondial, they have decided that under these conditions, they refuse to attend the show. The reason is simple : a new pipe show needs artisan carvers to attract an audience of pipe afficionados, but the artisan carvers don’t need a new pipe show to sell their product. Michel Burton clearly ignores the fact that the demand for artisan made pipes is higher than the offer and that each and every established pipe maker has all the outlets he needs. Why should a Danish or an American pipe maker bear the expenses to travel to Paris, to stay over in a hotel and to pay a table fee of 700 euro (about $1000) ? To sell at wholesale prices at some shop owners ? To be confronted with visitors looking for machine mades from the French producers ? France is cut from the international community of pipe collectors. The star carvers are completely unknown to the French pipe smokers. The French aren’t used to the prices of high grade pipes. Hence for the pipe makers, coming over to France is a serious risk as it is. Yet, the organizer wants them to pay an outrageous fee to take that risk. It’s madness. Now, if the pipe artists don’t come over, why should the passionate pipe smokers attend ? They won’t even be allowed to buy tobacco or to smoke a pipe ! A pipe show where pipe smoking is prohibited. Sounds like a gastronomy fair where food can’t be tasted. Pipe makers, connoisseurs and I did our best to inform the organizer, to argument our opinions and to give him all the necessary advice. Michel Burton didn’t listen. He decided to go for a fair for professionals where pipe smokers aren’t really welcome. It was our sincere intention to support the Mondial de la pipe. Under these conditions we can’t. We were hoping for a highlight that would put Paris on the map of the big pipe events. We were eager to finally get our own big pipe show and to welcome artisans from around the world. A real Mondial de la pipe. A feast. A celebration. Apparently, we were wrong.

Bonne pipe |
| Der Guillaume, I've seen it this morning ;-( - really bad news! I fully agree with Trevor's statement - under this circunstances I also will stay at home. Thank you for your info best regards Holger Hh |
| And if anyone wants an excellent example of the attention that is
being paid to our complaints - this morning I received a call from the
organizer's office. I was expecting it to be some argument over the
statement on my website, but apprently the caller was unaware that I
even had a website and was not attending... he was calling to try to
sell me to attend! He did not even seem aware of the complaints here
about the show. Beyond that, he did not know I lived in France, and
thought he was calling the UK... I refused to attend, but he is mailing
me literature about the show anyway. Bizarre. I really think that FdP should boycott the show. Trever Talbert |
